The overlooked architecture of a place to sit

A bench is a small invitation to spend time rather than pass through.

Look at the position

A seat facing a busy path offers a different experience from one tucked beside a planted border. Notice where you would choose to stop and how the surrounding space supports that choice.

Think about comfort

Shade, wind, nearby noise and a clear approach all affect whether a place feels welcoming. These ordinary details can matter more than an unusual shape or an expensive material.

Observe without judging too quickly

A place that seems empty at one time may be useful at another. Return when you can and notice who uses it and for what. Good public space makes room for more than one pace of life.
